Issues
My campaign focuses on three main issues: affordable housing, economic development, and collaboration.
If you would like to know my position on an important issue, don't hesitate to contact me at tenillekaus@gmail.com. Please allow me a reasonable amount of time to research the issue and respond. If the issue broadly impacts the community, I will publicly share my response on this website.
Affordable Housing
I am committed to keeping Shaker Heights a diverse community, including socioeconomic diversity.
Every person deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Yet, too many families, seniors, and young professionals struggle with rising rents, home prices, rising property taxes, rising homeowners insurance due to environmental changes, and a lack of available housing. I am committed to prioritizing housing affordability by increasing access to quality and affordable housing.

Shaker Historical Museum Levy
This past Monday, April 14, 2025, the Shaker Historical Museum presented to Shaker Heights City Council a request for a levy on the November ballot for operating funds. I fundamentally believe that government works best when people are at the table and have a voice. Therefore, I will vote to place the levy on the ballot. I believe voters should have a say if they want to support this levy.
While placing the levy on the ballot is essential to me, and I believe it is necessary for democracy, I am cautious, knowing affordable housing in Shaker Heights is becoming a more prominent problem. Part of affordable housing is property taxes and homeowners’ insurance. This past year, Cuyahoga County reevaluated taxes under state law, and many owners' property taxes increased. Additionally, because of changes in weather patterns, which I believe are attributed to global warming, homeowners' insurance has increased for many property owners. While I am placing the levy on the ballot because I believe in the true spirit of democracy, I remain sympathetic to the high tax rates in Shaker Heights and the affordability of living in Shaker Heights for all who desire to call Shaker Heights their home.summary here. Gun Violence
Yesterday, politics became personal. My daughter was inside Shaker Library during an active shooting event. My prayers and my future actions are with the families and friends of the victim, the shooter, the library workers, our first responders, and all those at the library during the shooting.
If you know me, you know I strongly support common-sense gun laws. My call to action is renewed. Out of respect for my daughter, I will not go into details as she and I go through this difficult time. However, I want to thank our first responders and cities who provided mutual aid, my friends and co-workers, who reached out to me, and my daughter's tutor, who I believe would have given her life for my daughter even though it was their first session together, and countless others whom I am forgetting.
When I moved to Shaker, one of the first places we went was to the library. The library is the heart and soul of a community. It's one of the few free places that still exist in society. When I interviewed for the Shaker Library Board I proudly served on, I said, “I find myself most in the library.”
While we are shaken, our love and passion remain for our Shaker Library. On several jobs and on several boards I have served on, I have advocated and enacted a safe leave policy. This policy gives victims of violence and their immediate family members a set amount of paid days off if they experience a violent situation. I took the day off today to be with my daughter. I needed it. She needed it. Safe Leave policies are needed. My resolve to enact policies that make a positive impact continues because thoughts and prayers are no longer enough to combat gun violence. summary here. Read More
